Game 1: Ups & Downs & Excitement

Wow! What else can I say. The Tribe put together what can only be called an exciting home opener today. Not only did they go out and score big early they then had to fight their way to break a tie game. Excitement all around.

OK
there are going to be a lot of Indians games I don’t listen to every
second of, this game was not one of them. Let’s run down the game
highlights:

– Thome comes in 0-11 against C.C. and leaves with 2 HR and 4 RBI
– Buehrle pitches 1.2 innings and leaves with a 37.80 ERA
– Tribe scores 7 in the second inning, and then 3 in the eight
– Gutierrez 3 for 3, 3 RBI, 2 runs, 1 BB
– Victor goes 2 for 2 but leaves early with a “tight” hamstring and is listed as day-to-day
– Some guy named Masset, who was not very good last year, holds the Tribe scoreless for 4.1 innings striking out 4
– Casey Blake’s 2 out baseclearing 3 RBI double clinches it for the Tribe.

The early line on Victor is just “tightness
but we’ll see what comes up. Actually this just in from Paul Hoynes at the PD.

Catcher Victor Martinez, who left Monday’s opener in the second inning with tightness in the left hamstring, was taken for an MRI during the game.

The Indians were vague about Martinez’s injury.

“There’s something going on with his hamstring,” said manager Eric Wedge. “They’re still taking a good look at it. We’re waiting to see what it is.”

In a postgame interview with Wedge it
sounded like Jensen Lewis is still in the COT, and Perez may be in the
doghouse. Betancourt pitched 1.2 innings scattered 3 hits and got out
of a tight bases loaded no out situation. An fielders choice thrown
home, on a close call at the plate, accounted for the first out, while
another hit to Peralta allowed him to tag second and record out number
2, and an amazing interference call accounted for the double play, to
end the inning. Borowski always needing to make a save situation or
make one more exciting gave up a solo HR and then proceeded to get the
final out.

Looking at the box score you might see a ton of
offense and wonder where all these HR’s came from. The wind was blowing
out all day from 15-22 mph. Supposedly Dye’s 9th innings homer was one
that just got up in the wind and sailed.

The Tribe is now 15-12
in Opening Day games against the White Sox. One piece of trivia, is
that Fellar’s Opening Day no hitter was against the White Sox in
Chicago.

The Tribe now have a 1-0 record, finishing the month of March in first place in the AL Central.  The Tribe play again Wednesday with Carmona facing Vazquez, a right hander with a 15-8 record last year, at Progressive Field with a 7:05 PM start time.

Go Tribe!
